Wing and a Prayer - B17's in Action over Frankfurt - WWII

This image depicts Robert "Kit" Cardwell's amazing flight. He flew 37 missions, received the DFC after his plane was damaged by flak over Frankfurt. All of his controls were shot away and his turbochargers on all four engines burned up. He managed to fly the 8 hour return trip using only his trim tabs and his ballturret gunner had his leg blown off by flak. On return his aircraft had over 250 holes in it, some the size of a fist. During the mission he saw 2 Me262's go by (top left).

Thanks to Robert Cardwell for his very insightful and detailed input he gave to the development of this image!

Rendering and details in Lightwave but also used MoI 3D for much of the modeling. It is a fantastic NURBS/Solids modeler with beautiful mesh exports. My new favorite modeler!

The Berlin Express Arrives in Paris

This image depicts an actual event. Bill Overstreet in his P51C “Berlin Express” of the 357th FG chased an ME 109 right under the Eiffel tower and shot him down just on the other side. I'm sure this didn't happen too often but it did happen at least once! Bill was a great help in producing this image and it was just fun to work on.
Spitfire Domain

This is one I did 4 years ago but it still seems to be a favorite. This shows George Beurling, Canada's top ace shooting down an FW190 in his Spitfire IX. I really enjoyed reading about George, he had some great fighter pilot stories and I had a lot of fun working on this piece.

In this scene he had spotted the 190 in his mirror, swung out of formation, shot down the 190 and returned to formation without any of his flight noticing. On landing he mentioned it to everyone's disbelief, but he had gun camera footage to prove it.

George was an excellent shot with most of his victories made with quick 1 or 2 second bursts.

Hope you enjoy it and comments welcome

Berlin Busters - Fearless Freddies Office

About 2 years ago I met a great pilot that had flown 55 missions in Lancasters through some of the most intense action of the war. Considering the losses, that was really pushing his luck. He had so many riveting stories. This image was passed back and forth to him many times until he said it was as close as he could remember and was completed about a year ago. It shows one of the raids over Berlin.

After the war was over he had continued his flying career with an astounding variety of aircraft and missions flown.

Sadly Neil Fuller or 'Fearless Freddie' passed away a few months ago. I'll always remember him and his stories fondly.

Courage Beyond Fear - The Dambusters

When I began this project I though it would be good to remember those who did pay the ultimate price on this daring mission. Lancaster AJ-M flown by John Hopgood was the second to cross the Mohne Dam. Being the second meant that all the enemy gunners were wide awake and ready. AJ-M was hit hard and crashed about 2km away but 2 of her crew, the bomb aimer John Fraser, and the tail gunner Tony Burcher made record breaking low level bailouts and survived the war as POW's.

Meeting some of the crew who actually flew this famous mission was a real pleasure.

The original canvas print with 4 crew signatures was purchased by Peter Jackson of Wingnut Films who is currently working on a Dambuster remake. I didn't see that coming!

Comments most welcome. Hope you enjoy

Robert help a great deal in the development of this image and was delighted when he received his first print. Prints are signed by him.
It must have been quite and experience. At first I put the 262 much further away but he kept saying, no, it was closer than that when I fired. A dive from 20,000 feet allowed Robert to get up enough speed to catch the jet. Comments most welcome.
